SUNFLOWER, MOSQUITO, KNOT, COOT, MONOBLOC CHAIR

At all film locations you will find grand statues by Chant van Lieshout (1994, Geldrop, NL).
The small, everyday, misunderstood and incomprehensible inspire van Lieshout the most. Bugs, as most common but least appreciated animals, therefore play a central role in the work of this artist. Zooming in on their small reality offers the opportunity to escape from everyday life. Through personal and site-specific stories, interwoven with poetic humor, the artist builds immersive worlds and sculptures made of ceramics, textile, epoxy resin and collected (audiovisual) materials. The bright colors of the figurative work transport the viewer to another, almost magical reality, in which childlike naivety, fun and absurdism blends. Playing with discomfort, the work exposes vulnerabilities and gives a voice to unheard or unwanted beings. The outcast is placed on a pedestal in a fantasy world where diversity is celebrated.

At the BUT Film Festival the artist will show several big blow up sculptures reflecting on bugs and their amazing abilities, with a darker undertone of the loss of biodiversity and bug population drastically declining. The works invite to wonder, to learn and most of all, to (take) care.

Lenka Doris (@engel_heks) is a Rotterdam-based artist and tattooist. The banner artwork is a gouache painting inspired by 1980s horror film posters and this year’s theme: Simply the Pest!
